Hello everyone, this is my first GWS thread. I will try to share a classic Swedish fish reciepe with you, so please tell me if my post lacks for some essential details.

The dish of the day is fried herring with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and butter.

I start out with a picture of the ingredients, some of them are rather local, but could probably be substituted. Butter is one of the centerpieces of this dish, so if you do not eat butter, find another recipe.

You need:

  • Fresh fileted herring or other small fish that is cheap where you live.
  • Salted, room-tempered butter, do not substitute the butter, you will be disappointed.
  • Salt and ground pepper.
  • Stale bread or breadcrumbs.
  • Fresh parsley
  • Milk
  • Beer (for the chef)
  • Potatoes that are good for mashing
  • Wheat flour
  • Lingonberry jam, can probably be substituted for some other tart jam (is there cranberry jam? if there is, that might work)

Begin with peeling chopping and boiling the potatoes in salted water. Open the beer and sit on the porch a while as this takes some time.

When the potatoes are soon finished it is time to prepare the herring. Mince the parsley and mix it with butter butter in a bowl. Put flour, breadcrumbs (chop up the stale bread in the food processor or use ready-made), salt and pepper in another bowl.

Put the parsley-butter mixture on top of half of the herring filets like this:

Add another filet on top and carefully dip both sides of them in the flour mixture.

Now the potatoes should be done so leave the herrings for a little while and get mashing.

To make good mashed potatoes add some butter and a bit of milk and work it until it is a bit thicker that whipped cream. Taste and add salt if needed.

When the mashed potatoes are done it is time to start frying. Add butter to an iron pan on medium heat. The butter should get slightly brown before you add the herrings. Fry them about 3 minutes on each side.

While the herrings are in the pan, melt some additional butter. When they are done, devour them with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, melted butter and what is left of your beer according to picture.

Looking back at this picture, I think I need some practice with the presentation, but the dish was good.
