Fried Chicken with Honey Mustard
Preamble[edit]
As you'll discover if you ever go to live abroad for any amount of time, you won't always be able to find restaurants serving your favorite food. Sure, there will be delicious local specialties, but sometimes you want something else, something you used to eat at home. So, you could either get a friend of yours to airmail you takeout, or you can just learn to make it yourself.
And so today I'll show you how to make some delicious fried chicken, with a nice and simple rice dish to accompany it.

- Chicken breasts, 3
- Milk, 1 cup
- Flour, 1 cup
- Oil for frying, 1.5 cups
- Garlic salt, 1 Tbsp
- Ground black pepper, 1 Tbsp
- Cayenne pepper, 1 Tbsp
- Rice, 1.5 cups
- Frozen mixed vegetables, 1 cup
- Honey, 1 spoonful
- Mustard (mild and/or spicy), to taste

First, cut the chicken up into strips:
Put the strips into a bowl and cover with milk:
Leave the bowl of milk and chicken in the fridge for an hour or two.
An hour or two is the perfect length of time in which to meet a friend for coffee and return the Giant Robot CD she lent you:
Now that you're back, pour out the milk from the bowl. Mix your garlic salt and the black and cayenne pepper together and rub this mixture evenly all over your chicken bits. If you want it to be spicier, use more cayenne pepper and vice versa. Add whatever other spices you want.
Put some flour in a plastic bag and then use said bag of flour to coat the chicken with flour. Lay the pieces out on wax paper and they should look something like this:
Let the chicken pieces sit for a bit and start preparing your rice dish. Put the 1.5 cups of rice in a pot with 3 cups of (salted) water and some frozen vegetables, then put this pot over medium-low heat:
The rice will basically take care of itself from this point if you just keep an eye on it, stir it every now and then, and don't burn it to the bottom of the pot.
Heat up some oil in a frying pan over high heat. Once the oil is nice and hot, put in a few chicken strips:
Let them cook for a few minutes ("until golden brown on one side"), then turn 'em over:
When the golden-brownness has covered the entire surface of the chicken, remove from the oil and place on a rack or some paper towels to get rid of excess oil. Check on your rice and repeat the frying steps with the next batch of chicken strips.
Once the chicken is all fried and the rice is done, you'll realize you forgot to make any sauce. All you need for a nice and simple honey mustard sauce is honey and mustard. Take a spoonful of honey and add generous amounts of mustard to it.
I used roughly equal amounts of mild and spicy mustard since the mustard here comes in 'unrelentingly mild' and 'THAT'S-A SPICY MEAT-A-BALL!' flavors with nothing in between. Adjust to your taste.
