Cranberry Shortcake Cookies

...if anyone's looking for a nontraditional christmas cookie, you could make cranberry shortbread cookies.
- 1 c butter
- 1/2 c sugar
- 2 T milk
- 1 t vanilla
- 1/2 t salt
- 2 1/2 c flour
- 1/2 c finely chopped pecans (optional)
- 3/4 c dried cranberries (or 1 1/4 c if not using pecans)
Cream butter, sugar, add the other ingredients in the order they are listed. Divide dough in half, roll into 8 x 1 1/2 logs. If you wanted you could brush the logs in water and roll in desiccated coconut at this point but I never do. Wrap the logs in cling film and chill in the fridge for 2 hours. With a serrated knife, cut the logs into slices, about 1/4 inch or a bit bigger, put on a baking sheet and bake at 375 10-12 minutes. You don't need to grease the baking sheet because there is so much butter in the recipe. And don't let them brown too much, shortbread is supposed to be pale.
These are tasty and they look pretty classy if you want to impress people with your cookies. The recipe's provenance is unknown; it's possibly from Martha. We have the recipe scribbled on the back of a piece of homework from 2001 so who knows.
