I have been making a tasty treat from peanut butter and cheerios for several years. The way the recipe was given to me, they were pretty sweet. I'd like to make them less sweet, and eat 'em for breakfast. Here's the recipe:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup light Karo syrup
  • 1 jar creamy peanut butter (apx 18 oz)
  • 5 cups Cheerios

Bring sugar and Karo to a boil in a pot large enough to hold all ingredients. Add peanut butter, remove from heat, stir until smooth. Stir in Cheerios. Spoon in cookie sized blobs on waxed paper, allow to cool.

I have been leaving out most of the cup of sugar. Some of the sweetness depends on what kind of peanut butter you use, but I'm not worried about that. I don't think I can use much less Karo and still have them stick together. Is there anything else I could substitute for some of the Karo?

Suggestion from Flash Gordon Ramsay: Stir some oats (quick oats?) in there.
