I fucking love bbq, and this is something I make all the time. Better than your run of the mill bratwursts since they aren't burned on the outside and soft in the middle. The taste is a combination of meat, onions, garlic, mustard and beer, and that's just the brat! They're perfect for a summer or spring night, and go well with just about anything. Hope you enjoy! Ingredients:
4 beers, I prefer lighter beers for this so it doesn't overpower the rest of the flavors (non-beer goons, try this recipe anyways, it's damn good even if you don't like the flavor of beer like my girlfriend) 2 5-packs of bratwursts (not the ones that come pre-flavored) 2 sweet onions (if you don't have any sweet onions, yellow ones will do fine but you might want to add a dash more brown sugar to prevent everything from becoming too bitter) 1 small jar of Dijon mustard (you use as much as you want) 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1-2 tablespoons fresh garlic 1/2 stick butter 10 buns
Optional: Drinks Chips Watermellon
The Cooks: Girlfriend:
Me:
Start out with a big empty pot, everything except the buns, chips and drinks will be in this container, so it better be somewhat big. You can halve the recipe if you want to save space.
Open up the brats and begin by poking holes with a fork on both sides. I usually do two jabs per side.
Pot Status:
Grab your two onions and begin to cut them in large slices. Be sure to remove the outer layer!
About the size of country fair style onion rings...
Girlfriend started crying at this point, I hope I don't have to write an E/N thread about it...
Go ahead and add that 1/2 stick of butter
Pot Status:
Begin cutting up the garlic, you can easily get the white outer shell off by cracking it with the side of your knife. Chop up about 4
Pot Status:
Scoop up the tablespoon of brown sugar. Make sure to pack it in before you add it to the pot.
Mustard time. MMMMmmmmm.... Mustard. Add as much as you want, I usually do about 4 tablespoons amount.
Pot Status:
Now it's time you've all been waiting for, begin adding the beer (slowly!) It should cover almost everything, but the onions loose alot of their structure when boiled so don't worry about them
Stir it up, little darling, stir it up...
Pot Status:
At this point, bring it up to a high boil and sit back for about a half hour, don't forget to turn on your fan, your house will smell like onion beer if you don't! This was 5 minutes into the boiling process:
...and after 25 or so:
Make sure you have your bbq ready for the brats when they're done. I don't know what type of grill you have so I can't tell you how long it will take. Get your buns ready too by adding a bit of butter (to brown them on the grill). I highly recommend the Weber gas/charcoal grill. The gas gets the charcoal hot really fast, and then you get to grill without the taste of propane, woo!
Pot Status:
30 minutes, pull that sucker!
Pour everything into a strainer, those onions are half the reason you make these! Hot Hot Hot!
Throw the brats on the grill, bout 2 minutes to a side, just enough to lightly grill them.
After the first flip, add your buttered up buns.
Hopefully somebody else is inside getting ready whatever else you might want with these, like watermelon
A feast fit for a king!

Was it good? Girlfriend says yes
Hope you enjoy these, it really isn't that hard to make. Yum yum yum yum yum...
